002MysteryShrink Short:  Who has the smallest rear, the youngest face, the finest clothes, the clearest skin? Who has the right skin color? Who are the losers? The winners?

In the documentary, Come Back, Africa (1960) Zacharia, a man from ‘the villages’, comes to Johannesburg where his new employer, the wealthy white lady of the house, motions the shabbily dressed and unclean new servant into the mansion and down a long hallway toward the kitchen. Zacharia has never been in any sort of house and is over-whelmed by the opulent surroundings. As he heads down the hallway, he is shocked to see another man striding straight toward him. Then, oops! He covers his mouth and laughs. The man is him. He’d never faced a mirror. He hadn’t known how he measured up–height, weight, color, age, straight or crooked teeth.bird of peace

Wow. Until that moment Zacharia had seen himself the way God sees us.

I'm a psychologist who goes to way too many movies, for the same reason I chose this profession. I love stories. I use movies and novels working with people in my office and during speaking engagements. "You should write some of this down," I kept being told. So, this is it, folks.
